Rabbi Rudolf Adler

Rabbi Rudolf Adler grew up in Germany and lived there as the Nazis rose to power. After high school, while attending yeshiva, he had the good fortune to be given a visa, along with his fellow rabbinic yeshiva students, to study in England. After a year in England, and detention camp internment there, all of the German rabbinic students were sent to Canada. Another year of internment in Canada followed before Rabbi Adler was able to continue his rabbinic studies. Eventually, he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Semitic Languages. He later earned another Masters Degree in Hebrew Literature, as well as two Doctorate Degrees from The Jewish Theological Seminary, one in Hebrew Literature and one in Divinity.

Rose Anisman Adler (ז”ל) grew up in Canada with her large observant family. She attended business school and helped in the family business. She met Rudy Adler at a Young Judea event in Toronto and the two were married in 1946.

After two positions in Canada, the Adlers moved to Cleveland, Ohio, which was followed by their move to Orlando in 1960, to become the Rabbi of Congregation Ohev Shalom. In addition to his duties at Ohev, Rabbi Adler has taught Judaic Studies at both Rollins College and UCF, he served as Jewish Chaplain of the Orlando Naval Training Center, and was active in the Interfaith Council, as well as the National Conference of Christians and Jews, where he also served a president and was the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. After 30 years of dedicated service to Ohev Shalom, Rabbi Adler became Rabbi Emeritus, but he still continued to serve the congregation and the community in numerous ways. Rose, of blessed memory, has been a true partner to Rabbi Adler, assisting him in many of his congregational duties, as well as working on projects for the elderly in the community and the Ma’Asim Tovim committee.

Rabbi and Rose have three children, Paul, Allan, and Rae, and six grandchildren.

Rabbi Rudolph J. Adler can be contacted at rabbiemeritus@ohevshalom.org.
